Escape From Monkey Island Introduction:
Escape from Monkey Island, released by LucasArts in 2000, marks the fourth installment in the Monkey Island series, following the 1997 release of The Curse of Monkey Island. This game represents a significant shift in the series, as it introduces 3D graphics and utilizes the upgraded GrimE engine, initially seen in Grim Fandango.
The storyline centers on Guybrush Threepwood, a pirate who returns home with his wife, Elaine Marley, after their honeymoon, only to discover that Elaine has been mistakenly declared dead, and her position as governor is up for grabs in an election. Guybrush embarks on a mission to reinstate Elaine as governor while uncovering a plot to turn the Caribbean into a tourist attraction, masterminded by his nemesis LeChuck and an Australian collaborator named Ozzie Mandrill.
Gameplay:
Escape from Monkey Island garnered positive reviews and achieved moderate commercial success. It holds the distinction of being the final adventure game released by LucasArts, as subsequent projects like Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels and Sam & Max: Freelance Police were canceled in 2003 and 2004, respectively. The game was succeeded by Tales of Monkey Island, developed by Telltale Games and released in 2009.
This adventure game primarily involves engaging in dialogues with characters and solving puzzles. Unlike its predecessors, the game can be controlled using the keyboard or a joystick, making it the only non-point-and-click installment in the Monkey Island series.
Notable features in the game include "action-lines," where Guybrush looks at interactable items, which players can select using 'Page Up' or 'Page Down.' Additionally, the classic insult swordfighting from previous games briefly appears as "insult armwrestling" and an unwinnable insult duel against Ozzie Mandrill. Later in the game, this concept transforms into "Monkey Kombat," a parody of Mortal Kombat, where players must memorize sequences of "monkey insults and retorts" consisting of randomized combinations of "monkey words" like "oop," "chee," "ack," and "eek."
The narrative begins with Guybrush and Elaine returning to Mêlée Island after their honeymoon, only to discover that Elaine has been declared dead, her governorship revoked, and her mansion marked for demolition. The election for the governor's position is in progress, with a candidate named Charles L. Charles emerging as the frontrunner. As Elaine launches her campaign to regain her role, Guybrush hires navigator Ignatius Cheese through an insult arm-wrestling match, reunites with old acquaintances Carla and Otis, and travels to Lucre Island to recover the Marley family heirlooms and the necessary legal documents to save her mansion. During his journey, Guybrush stumbles upon the Marley family's deepest secret: the Ultimate Insult, a voodoo talisman capable of spreading devastating insults that break the spirits of those who hear them. He is wrongfully accused of bank robbery orchestrated by crook Pegnose Pete, working for Australian land developer Ozzie Mandrill but ultimately proves his innocence.
After obtaining the legal deeds and returning home, Guybrush and Elaine uncover Charles L. Charles' true identity as the shape-shifting Demon Pirate LeChuck, recently released from his icy prison and seeking the Ultimate Insult. As Elaine continues her campaign, Guybrush explores Jambalaya and Knuttin Atoll islands to recover the Ultimate Insult's components. However, upon returning home, he is ambushed by the newly elected governor LeChuck and Ozzie Mandrill, who steal the components. It becomes apparent that the two villains are collaborating, with Ozzie aiming to eliminate all pirates and transform the Caribbean into a resort, while LeChuck wishes to use the Ultimate Insult to break Elaine's spirit and marry her. To keep Guybrush as a hostage, they abandon him on Monkey Island.
Final Words:
Despite initial setbacks, Guybrush begins his escape plan. He learns the art of Monkey Kombat from the "monkey prince of Monkey Island" and, upon restoring the memory of the hermit Herman Toothrot, discovers that the old man is Elaine's long-lost grandfather, who suffered amnesia after being pushed into a whirlpool off the coast of Australia by Ozzie. Guybrush constructs an even larger Ultimate Insult and uncovers a giant piloted monkey robot within the colossal monkey head statue on the island. He reactivates the Mecha, and Herman and the island's monkeys join him in piloting it. Using the robot, Guybrush manages to disable an Ultimate Insult amplifier created by Ozzie before returning to Mêlée. During this time, Ozzie captures Elaine and assembles the Ultimate Insult. When it appears to fail due to the lack of an amplifier, LeChuck takes matters into his own hands by possessing a statue of himself. Ozzie utilizes the Ultimate Insult to take control of LeChuck's statue form, engaging in Monkey Kombat against Guybrush's monkey robot. In a duel filled with ties, Elaine manages to escape, and LeChuck's frustration leads him to inadvertently crush Ozzie, destroying the Ultimate Insult in the process. LeChuck then explodes. Guybrush and Elaine reunite, and Grandpa Marley resumes his role as governor of Mêlée Island, allowing the couple to return to their pirate life.
